Meditation

I love to meditate in the early morning after I do my yoga practice.  I do it every day–my 30 or 40 minutes of deep quiet and prayer.  I get out of bed at 4:30 so I can do my yoga for about an hour, and then I get to meditate.

I started with sitting meditation, Vipassana, following the breath for about 10 minutes.  But I sit a lot at work, and I needed to try something different.  You do not have to find “the” correct way.  Find your own way.  Now I meditate with crystals on a meditation table (massage table).  I have crystal pyramids that correspond to the chakras, and I place them on my body to help me focus.  I start out by  observing these energy centers, visualizing the brightness and color in each.  I open each center mentally, visualizing the chakras spinning and shining.  This focus calms the chatter of my mind.

What time do you fall asleep at night? 4:30am is incredibly early! What would you recommend for a mother of 2 young children (2 and 4 yrs old)? Sorry to be posting all over your site.

I am delighted to have your posts! I go to bed at 9:30, so that is pretty early too. Make your meditation easy for yourself so you can squeeze it in. Even 10 minutes will help you feel centered, more patient, more serene. As a mom, I imagine you don’t often make your own needs a priority, but this little bit of time you make for yourself on a regular basis will benefit the whole family greatly. If you miss a day, just find a few moments in that day to appreciate something in your world. Contemplation is a form of meditation. The ideal thing is to just make it a habit at a specific time every day. But if that is not possible, anything you are able to do will be good for you, them, and since we are all connected–all of us!

This weekend I cooked for dear friends. Cooking is not something I do often, and when I do cook, I am slow. Even if I want to hurry, I am slow. I find it meditative to chop and smell and see the colors of fruits and veggies. Like us humans, with care they come together into something even more delicious than they were as separate ingredients. And like with my paintings, I know when my work is finished, I am giving of myself to those for whom I create.
